What is Spiritual Warfare?

A biblical definition, the weapons available to you, the principalities most often at work, the warning signs, and a protocol you can pray today.

1. A biblical definition of spiritual warfare

Spiritual warfare is the conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness, waged over people, families, territories, and destinies. Paul is precise about the battlefield: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:12). The war is real, but it is not fought with argument, willpower, or human strategy — “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4).

Warfare is therefore not fear-driven. It is authority exercised from a seated position in Christ (Ephesians 2:6). You do not fight for victory; you enforce a victory already won at the cross (Colossians 2:15).

2. The weapons of our warfare

  • The blood of Jesus — the legal ground of every deliverance (Revelation 12:11).
  • The word of God spoken aloud — the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17).
  • The name of Jesus — the authority under which devils submit (Luke 10:17).
  • Prayer and fasting — for entrenched strongholds (Matthew 17:21).
  • Repentance and renunciation — closing legal doors the enemy is using.
  • Forgiveness — removing the tormentor's warrant (Matthew 18:34-35).
  • Praise — the posture that dismantles ambush (2 Chronicles 20:22).

3. The five principalities

Warfare is specific. Each principality operates by a signature pattern and is defeated by a specific mechanism: the spirit of Religion (form without power), Leviathan (pride and twisted communication), Jezebel (control and seduction), Apollyon (destruction and delay), and Azazel (scapegoating and wilderness exile).

4. Signs of a spiritual attack

Sudden heaviness or oppression, recurring nightmares, persistent sickness without medical cause, unexplained conflict in the home, repeating generational patterns of poverty or loss, torment of the mind, and a collapsed appetite for prayer and scripture. These are indicators to be tested in prayer — not diagnoses. Always seek medical care for medical symptoms.

5. The 5-step deliverance protocol

  1. Confess and repent of every known sin giving the enemy legal ground.
  2. Renounce by name every covenant, vow, inherited pattern, and object of attachment.
  3. Plead the blood of Jesus over your body, mind, household, and bloodline.
  4. Command the entity to go in the name of Jesus — name it, do not negotiate with it.
  5. Fill the ground with worship, scripture, and obedience so it is not reoccupied (Matthew 12:43-45).

6. Frequently asked questions

What is spiritual warfare?
Spiritual warfare is the ongoing conflict between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness, fought not with physical weapons but with prayer, scripture, repentance, and the authority of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 6:12 states that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places.
Is spiritual warfare biblical?
Yes. Spiritual warfare is described throughout scripture — Ephesians 6:10-18 (the armour of God), 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (the weapons of our warfare are mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds), Daniel 10 (the prince of Persia withstanding an angelic messenger), and the deliverance ministry of Jesus in the Gospels.
What are the weapons of spiritual warfare?
The weapons are the blood of Jesus, the word of God spoken aloud, the name of Jesus, prayer and fasting, praise, repentance and renunciation, forgiveness, and obedience. Revelation 12:11 says they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.
What are the signs of a spiritual attack?
Common indicators include sudden unexplained oppression or heaviness, recurring nightmares, persistent sickness with no medical cause, chronic conflict in the home, financial patterns that repeat across generations, torment of the mind, and a loss of appetite for prayer and scripture. These are indicators to be tested, not diagnoses — always seek medical care for medical symptoms.
How do I pray against spiritual attack?
Pray in five steps: confess and repent of any legal ground, renounce every covenant and inherited pattern by name, plead the blood of Jesus over yourself and your household, command the entity to leave in the name of Jesus, and then fill the ground with worship, scripture, and obedience so it is not reoccupied.
Can a Christian be under demonic oppression?
A believer belongs to Christ, but unrepented sin, unforgiveness, generational covenants, and open doors can give the enemy legal ground to oppress. Deliverance closes those doors through confession, renunciation, and the authority of Christ.
