Section 1 — What 3 Enoch is
3 Enoch, also called Sefer Hekhalot ("The Book of the Palaces"), is a Hebrew merkabah text usually dated between the fifth and sixth centuries AD. It is written as the first-person testimony of Rabbi Ishmael ben Elisha, a priest who is carried up through the seven heavenly palaces and received at the throne by the angel Metatron.
It is not scripture in any canon — Jewish, Protestant, Catholic or Orthodox. It is a witness to how heavenly government, angelic rank and territorial authority were understood in the centuries around the New Testament, and it is read here only for that historical and theological context.
